Creature Design: Red Wyvern

2D Creature Design | Procreate | November 2025

Growing up, I was obsessed with dragons, to the point where entire sketchbooks were filled with the majestic beasts. I loved anything related to them, such as How to Train Your Dragon, Spyro, Fairy Tail and book series like Wings of Fire and Eragon. Looking back at my childhood drawings inspired me to rediscover why I became an artist in the first place.

An adorable little dragon I drew at age 11. Was likely (definitely) inspired by Charizard.

While humans may now be my speciality, I wanted to test my skills and design a dragon my child self would adore.

Initial concept

The initial concept started out as a singular portrait. Some aspects of the head were changed later in the process.

Design sketches

For the full body design, I sketched out two concepts (and included a human character for size reference, they were meant to be a pair). I wanted to emphasize the sharpness of the design through its frills, teeth, and tail. Ultimately, I chose the wyvern design because I liked its front-heavy silhouette.

posing

For the actual character sheet, I wanted the wyvern to be posed in an intimidatingly beautiful fashion, showcasing both gracefulness and strength. The design was slightly altered to reflect that.

Character sheet

The final sheet includes the full body pose, two headshots that showcase different angles/details of the face, and a size reference. I thought it was especially important to include different views of the teeth, horns, and frills to provide better perspective.

Overall, I am satisfied with the final version of the wyvern! Comparing it to my childhood drawing was quite inspiring. Since I initially designed the dragon with a potential human companion/rider in mind, I would like to expand on that idea for a future project.
